How to Tell if it is Time to Replace a Rubber Expansion Joint

Posted: September 28, 2021 | Category: Expansion Joint Safety, Expansion Joints

Rubber expansion joints are vital parts of any piping system regardless of the fluids, gases, and other materials they transfer. If these joints fail, the entire piping system can be compromised and the surrounding environment can be exposed to hazardous materials. Knowing how to tell if it is time to replace a rubber expansion joint is crucial for preventing failure and maintaining a high level of safety. As leading providers of rubber expansion joints and flexible hoses, Flextech Industries knows the importance of identifying worn parts before it is too late. That is why we have provided a list of common signs that it is time to replace your rubber expansion joint.

Signs that it is Time to Replace Your Rubber Expansion Joint

If your rubber expansion joint is starting to display any of the following types of damage, it is time to replace it:

Cracking

Cracking can occur due to excess extension, compression, and angular or lateral movements. It can be identified by the flattening of the arch or cracks at the base of the arch.  If cracking is only present in the outer layer and the fabric is not exposed, the expansion joint is still safe to use. If the fabric is clearly visible, the expansion joint will need to be replaced as soon as possible.

Rubber Deterioration

A rubber expansion joint should feel smooth and firm. If it is starting to feel gummy, stiff, or brittle, a replacement unit should be installed as soon as possible. Chemical exposure and aging are the most common causes of rubber deterioration. If your piping system handles chemicals, you will need to inspect your rubber expansion joints more frequently to look for any signs of deterioration.

Visible Metal Reinforcement

Most rubber expansion joints feature wire or solid steel rings embedded in the sleeve to enhance durability. If any of this metal starts to poke through the rubber sleeve, the expansion joint must be replaced as soon as possible. If the expansion joint features external metal reinforcement, be sure to examine it regularly for signs of fatigue or wear. You will need to order a new rubber expansion joint at the first sign of wear or damage to these metal elements.

Leakage

If leakage is occurring from any area of the rubber expansion joint—except where the flanges meet—it must be replaced immediately. These holes or cracks should never be patched as this will not deliver a lasting fix. If leaks are occurring where the flanges meet, turning off the pressure and tightening all bolts may fix the problem with needing to replace the joint.
